A 2023 exploratory study of 14 adults recruited from an intensive outpatient program identified themes involving unused time, positive supports and the need for structure (Kitzinger et al., 2023). This small, non-experimental study does not establish that a particular activity prevents relapse.

North Oconee River Greenway Trail
Athens-Clarke County reports 3.1 miles of natural-surface hiking trails and 8 miles of concrete multi-use trails across the Oconee Rivers Greenway Trails System (Athens-Clarke County, 2025). These are system-wide lengths, not the length of the North Oconee River trail alone.
The North Oconee River Greenway runs from Sandy Creek Nature Center through Dudley Park and the Oconee Hill Cemetery toward Bailey Street and Carriage Lane. Check the county’s trail information for access points, conditions and closures.
