Brief Overview of Narcotics Anonymous (NA)

Narcotics Anonymous is a 12-step program that follows the same pathway to sobriety as Alcoholics Anonymous. NA members attend weekly meetings for support and accountability and follow their recovery path at their own pace.

The venue types vary, with meetings in community centers, union halls, churches, or any locations willing to donate a quiet, private space.

A Short History of NA Meetings

James Patrick Kinnon, better known as “Jimmy K,” immigrated to the United States from Ireland. He developed a drug addiction as a young man and helped establish NA in Los Angeles in 1953, after overcoming his own challenges. He was inspired by the success of AA and wanted to help others.

Today, NA offers over 700,000 meetings in over 144 countries. They also offer online support for people who don’t have a meeting nearby, thus broadening their reach even further.

Trigger Warning (Use of the Word Addict in NA Meetings)

The NA program uses very direct language that we usually avoid, including “addict.” The intent of this word choice is to force accountability for a person’s addictive behavior.

While modern mental health professionals may consider this stigmatizing, it was a groundbreaking idea to admit out loud that one was an “addict” at the time of the group’s founding.

Understanding NA Meeting Formats

Closed Meetings

NA offers several types of meetings to cater to the diverse needs of every person. Here are some common format types:

Open Meetings

Anyone can join open meetings, including family members, friends, or caring neighbors. They provide the chance to destigmatize addiction by having conversations about it.

Closed Meetings

Only those experiencing challenges with substance abuse may attend closed meetings. They focus on the lived experiences of those in recovery. These can be very heartfelt and personal descriptions of life that they prefer to keep among AA participants.

Men’s, Women’s, LGBTQ+ Meetings

Some meetings are separate affinity groups, especially for allowing communities to connect with others who understand their unique journey. These include men’s, women’s, and LGBTQ+ meetings.

There are also speaker meetings, discussion meetings, newcomer meetings, and more. As you read the meeting description that interests you, you can hover over the little information button (i) next to the description to learn more.

What to Expect at NA Meetings

As you prepare to go to your first Atlanta, Georgia, NA meeting, you might feel anxious. That’s okay and very typical. Use your breathing techniques and relax. You’ve got this.

Keep reading to discover what to expect at NA meetings.

In-Person NA Meetings

In-Person NA Meeting

You will notice immediately that NA meetings are warm, welcoming, and inclusive. Weekly members are very warm and often introduce themselves to the new person. They’ve been in your shoes and understand the amount of courage it takes to show up for that first meeting.

You’ll probably read about the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions of NA. These opening readings help you better understand how the program meets the needs of so many people.

Most meetings follow the open discussion format. Each person can share their lived experiences with the group and discuss that relapse prevention strategies have been helpful. Some meetings provide additional support by inviting guest speakers who share specific expertise in addiction recovery.

You’ll have a few minutes to socialize with your peers before and after the group officially meets. You will feel relieved that others in Atlanta, GA, have shared your struggles. You’ve found your people; you’re not alone.

Virtual NA Meetings

Getting help from a virtual meeting is an ideal opportunity for the person who lives in a more rural area outside of Atlanta, Georgia. The convenience of the online format makes it possible for many who have transportation or location challenges (or just a hectic life) to receive valuable support.
