Every client has the chance to overcome mental health challenges with the help of the caring staff at our Eastman, Georgia, addiction treatment center.

But now you might ask: What does Multiplan cover? Please keep reading. You’ll learn about the Multiplan network and how they make drug and alcohol rehab at Ingrained more affordable for members.

Multiplan Insurance Coverage Supports Drug and Alcohol Rehab

Calling Multiplan “health insurance” is a bit of a misnomer. Multiplan is not a single health insurance company or health maintenance organization (HMO). They don’t provide health insurance coverage or underwrite policies.

If you see a “Multiplan insurance policy” logo on your benefits card, it means that your insurance provider offers Multiplan coverage. That logo indicates you’re part of the cost-saving network.

Instead, they are a healthcare cost management company. They negotiate favorable service costs for health insurance providers, group health plan providers, and other payers. Their efforts help reduce out-of-pocket costs for Multiplan health insurance plan members.

Understanding Multiplan Rehab Coverage for Addiction Treatment

Multiplan Negotiates with Healthcare Professionals

Multiplan negotiates contracts between hospitals, medical professionals, and specialty providers (including addiction treatment specialists), forming the Multiplan PPO Network. The Multiplan network is one of the largest preferred provider organizations in the United States.

Some of the better-known insurance providers in the PPO network include:

  • Aetna
  • Cigna
  • Humana
  • United Healthcare
  • Many other regional plans

In addition to the Multiplan network for people with group health insurance, they offer ValuePoint by Multiplan, which helps self-pay and uninsured people find cost savings on healthcare.

Does Multiplan Cover Mental Health Treatment?

Most Multiplan insurance partners comply with the Affordable Care Act of 2010, often called Obamacare. The 2010 law forced health insurance companies to consider mental health treatment and services equally as important as physical health or surgical needs.

A couple notable exceptions include:

  • Self-funded employer plans: Because they do not offer their Multiplan benefits on the national health insurance marketplace, they may offer bare minimum services to address mental health disorders.
  • Grandfathered plans (pre-2010): Group plans established before 2010, and which have made insignificant changes since then, are sometimes grandfathered under the pre-Obamacare rule.

Applying Multiplan Coverage to Mental Health Services

Receiving approval of benefits for mental health care, such as addiction treatment services, can feel awkward for consumers. That’s intentional on the part of some insurers. Although they’re required today to cover drug and alcohol rehab, that was not always the case – a grudge point for some insurance companies.

Before the ACA, many insurance plans excluded or severely restricted access to drug or alcohol addiction treatment and other mental health services. If they included coverage for addiction treatment at all, they:

  • Offered limited access to affordable, well-qualified providers
  • Refused to provide coverage on the basis of “pre-existing conditions”
  • Wrote policies with very low annual and lifetime limits, rendering mental health care almost impossible to access

They treated mental health and addiction treatment members as second-class citizens. Unfortunately, that company culture of denying substance abuse care persists within some insurance companies. A January 2025 ProPublica report still found evidence of biases against mental and behavioral health services by insurers.

What Mental Health Issues Are Eligible for Insurance Coverage?

Multiplan rehab coverage for addiction treatment extends to an array of inpatient rehab and outpatient treatment options. Details may differ slightly based on plan type and state regulations. Generally, these conditions are covered by Multiplan insurance partners:

  • Mood disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Personality disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Substance use disorder
  • Psychotic disorders
  • Behavioral health disorders

The key to obtaining approval for care is proving medical necessity. A letter, email, or phone call from your mental health professional can help ensure your success when seeking treatment.

What Substance Abuse Treatment Services Are Covered?

Substance Abuse Treatment Services

Most insurance plans cover these treatments, with approvals based on client needs.

Residential/Inpatient Treatment Programs for Drug and Alcohol Addiction

PPOs provide coverage for residential treatment for clients with the most profound substance abuse disorders. With severe cases, or those complicated by co-occurring disorders, inpatient treatment options provide the most structure and comprehensive care.

Residential/inpatient treatment programs are our specialty. We provide clients with supportive, comfortable support in a luxurious ranch setting.

Outpatient Treatment Programs

PPOs prefer to cover treatment in the less intensive setting of an outpatient treatment center for those who can function in daily life. Ingrained has partnered with some of Georgia’s top outpatient treatment facilities to help deliver care where clients need it – near their workplaces, homes, and schools.

Many drug rehab centers offer two levels of outpatient treatment:

Partial Hospitalization Programs

PHPs are a step down from inpatient rehab. They offer highly structured programs and intensive therapy sessions. PHP clients have more flexibility than inpatients, attending alcohol or drug treatment all day and sleeping at home every night.

Intensive Outpatient Programs

IOPs provide structure and support in the most flexible setting. Clients attend therapy sessions a few hours, several days per week. They can attend their jobs or classes and meet family obligations. This recovery process is very effective for people who can function well and aren’t in harm’s way.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Preferred provider organizations in the Multiplan insurance network cover drug addiction treatment plus an additional mental health disorder – a dual diagnosis. Addressing both issues is important to achieve lasting sobriety. We work on confronting the underlying condition simultaneously with drug rehab.

Our holistic approach gives you the best odds of managing addiction in the future.

Medical Detox (First Step to Ending Drug Abuse)

The first phase of alcohol or drug rehab is detoxing, the process of metabolizing and eliminating substances from the body. Substances reconfigure the brain’s reward network. With chronic use, the brain replaces typical rewards – a hug, smile, or verbal praise – with the chemical rewards offered by substances. Because of this reconfiguration, starting drug rehab can confuse the brain.

Once it realizes it’s not receiving its next anticipated drug use, it starts sending out panic signals that present as withdrawal symptoms.

Withdrawing can create symptoms that range from moderate to severe – deadly, in some cases. Because safe withdrawal requires the skilled team at a medical detox center, Multiplan insurance providers allow for this specialty care.

Medication-Assisted Treatment

Medication Assisted Treatment

Multiplan insurance provides benefits for MAT to care for people ending their struggles with alcohol, opioids, and prescription opiate painkillers. The chemicals in those drugs are especially dangerous to quit. Withdrawal symptoms, including seizures, heart issues, and thoughts of self-harm, can persist for several weeks, endangering the individual.

MAT replaces the abused substance with a less harmful replacement so the brain can slowly transition off the drug. Dosages are stepped down as appropriate until they no longer need them. MAT usually starts during medically supervised detox and continues as the client progresses and starts psychotherapy and behavior modification sessions.

Counseling and Therapy Sessions

Psychotherapy, behavioral health sessions, and life skills counseling comprise the core of our programs at Ingrained Recovery. Multiplan insurance participants acknowledge the effectiveness of these evidence-based programs and allow clients to receive this care.

Some types of therapy most insurance providers will cover when a provider deems it medically necessary include the following:

Therapy sessions at Ingrained occur individually with a counselor, in peer groups, or with family members. Each setting offers individually tailored support.
