Your Guide to Hosting a Successful Intervention for a Loved One
An effective intervention can be a life-saving turning point. The following steps will help you host a successful drug intervention for a loved one.
Hire a Professional Interventionist
First, you want to make sure that you hire a professional drug interventionist. A drug interventionist will be there to guide your family through every step of the drug intervention, from day one of the planning process to the intervention itself.
Drug interventionists come from all walks of life. It is ideal to work with a trained interventionist with a high level of experience. Ingrained Recovery can help connect you with a drug interventionist if needed.
Build Your Intervention Team
There are a couple of guidelines you should consider when building your intervention team. The first is the size of the intervention team. We recommend that you include five or six people in the intervention so as not to overwhelm your loved one.
The people involved in the intervention should be the individuals closest to the person struggling with addiction, like parents, best friends, or romantic partners. It is important that everyone there is able to avoid raising their voice or shaming the person.
Write Impact Statements
A drug intervention will include impact statements that you read out loud. The goal of these statements is not to shame your loved one. Instead, it is to talk about the effects substance abuse has had on the people around them.
When you write your impact statement, make sure that you are as specific as possible. You might write about financial repercussions, childcare issues, or any other consequences that stand out.
Ideally, your impact statement should be short–about five minutes long or less. Take care to separate your loved one and their addiction when you write the statement.

Plan for What to Say
Alongside impact statements, there are other things you might want to discuss during a drug intervention for a loved one. For example, you might want to say:
- “Thank you.” Show that you appreciate your loved one. Whether you’re telling them that you’re grateful for who they are or have another positive quality to express, this can help to soften the delivery of the intervention so that it doesn’t feel like an attack.
- “I love you.” Again, expressing your love is one of the most important things you can do. The person in your life facing addiction needs to know that they are loved and cared for; say it out loud.
- “Here are my boundaries.” In some cases, the intervention process might include boundary setting. For example, if you’ve provided financial support that has enabled the person’s drug or alcohol use up until this point, it may be time to establish boundaries.
All of these things can be discussed with the drug interventionist preemptively. That way, you can feel confident in your wording and tailor the intervention to meet the unique circumstances of your loved one and family.
Have a Rehearsal Intervention
Before the day of the intervention, you want to have a rehearsal intervention without your loved one present. During the rehearsal, the drug interventionist and other members of your team should all be there.
You will rehearse your impact statements together and solidify your plan. This should help you get through some of the nervousness that can come with this process.
Securing Professional Help at Our Upscale Treatment Center
Securing professional help is a crucial step in the drug intervention process. When you secure a treatment placement for your loved one, everything will be in place for them to get help if they agree to participate in a substance abuse treatment program by the end of the intervention. It takes searching for treatment off their shoulders.
Drug addiction treatment can be challenging to find. We offer effective rehab programs covered by insurance in Georgia, and we can secure a treatment placement for your loved one before their intervention takes place.
Assessing Your Loved One’s Specific Needs
Everyone facing a substance use disorder has a different story. This can impact the way that an intervention should be conducted, including what you want to say during your intervention.
However, the individual needs of your loved one will also impact the kind of treatment that is right for them. Things to consider may include:
- There are instances where childcare is very important for the person. In this case, you may want to come into the intervention with a plan for who can take care of their kids should they agree to treatment (e.g., grandparents, romantic partners) or the option of an outpatient program.
- Past trauma at treatment centers. If your loved one has been to treatment before, there is a possibility that they have had a negative experience. Choosing a trauma-informed center like Ingrained Recovery with an innovative, compassionate, and human-centered approach can help. We are here to discuss treatment with your loved one (and you) in-depth to put them at ease.
- Cost and payment. Cost is a common barrier to addiction treatment. Ingrained Recovery accepts most forms of insurance. We’re here to discuss insurance coverage and other possible payment options or solutions preemptively to ensure that your loved one can get help.
Ingrained Recovery provides highly personalized addiction treatment. We have specialized programs and resources so that people in diverse groups (e.g., executives, people with co-occurring disorders) get the care they need.
Prepare Yourself for a Range of Reactions
Everyone will react to interventions differently, so it is important to be prepared for a range of responses. Your loved one might agree to treatment, refuse treatment, or agree to think about it. Even though you cannot always control the outcome, a drug intervention can be the first step toward getting your loved one help.
Execution and Follow-Up
An alcohol and/or drug intervention involves careful planning (as do those for clients facing a serious mental illness or life-disrupting mental health disorder). Again, you want to make sure to remain calm and composed during the intervention itself. When your loved one speaks, use active listening skills. If there’s anything you’re concerned about prior to the day of the intervention, talk to your interventionist.
After the intervention, it is also important to follow up with the individual and their support system. A professional interventionist you work with should follow up to see how your loved one’s treatment is going and how they are feeling.
How Ingrained Recovery Can Help Stage an Intervention
In addition to assisting with drug intervention services, Ingrained Recovery will be here for you and your family throughout the entirety of the recovery process.
Here are some of the ways we can help.
Same-Day Admissions
We accept same-day admissions as long as there’s a spot available. While this may not be applicable in the case of an intervention, we will hold your loved one’s place and walk your loved one and family through the admissions process.
During the intake process, we’ll discuss things like what to bring to treatment, what to expect, and whether or not your loved one has been to treatment before.

Resources for Loved Ones During an Intervention
It’s a well-known fact that addiction can impact the entire family, not just the person who is actively facing drug and alcohol abuse. You might experience mental and emotional health challenges, financial issues, concerns about kids in your family, or something else.
While you may feel alone, you are not. There are resources that provide support for loved ones of people facing addiction, including but not limited to the following.
These support groups can help your family connect with others who have been through the same thing. The staff members at our center have a personal understanding of addiction, and we are here to help you and your family heal from substance abuse and its effects in a supportive environment.

FAQs About How to Stage an Intervention Successfully
What are the goals of a drug intervention?
What defines a successful intervention can vary. The goals of a drug intervention often include:
- Helping your loved one understand that they have a problem.
- Expressing your love and concern for the person.
- Encouraging the person to seek treatment.
It can be helpful to keep these goals in mind as you move through the process.
What does “staged an intervention” mean?
Most commonly, an intervention refers to a group discussion where a person is confronted about their substance addiction and how it affects their loved ones. However, interventions can also be staged for other mental health conditions and behavioral addictions.
Why does my loved one use substances?
It really is true that anyone can struggle with addiction. There are a lot of reasons people use substances, like self-medication for another health condition, difficulty getting through the withdrawal process, underlying trauma, or feeling disconnected from others and the world.
There are also healthier ways to address these concerns and ensure that a person’s needs are met. Ingrained Recovery treats the underlying causes and contributing factors of addiction comprehensively.
Why don’t people seek treatment for addiction?
Some people don’t seek help for addiction on their own, which is part of why intervention can be beneficial. Reasons for this can include but aren’t limited to cost, the fear of withdrawal symptoms, denial, shame, and feelings of hopelessness.
